CHICAGO HAS FALLEN

I was there when the sand rode in,

and the darkness with it.

Then came the screaming.

I pay my way to the handle.

And find a hand there already, trying to shake the door open.

“Let me in! I'll shoot! Let me in!”

Afraid to lose my chance, I pulled on the door.

But I stopped when I heard the lock squeak open.

And two hands pulled me in.

We fell inside.

In the first moment of life with breath still pulling through my throat,

Coated with sand,

I sprinted up to the bar

And begged pathetically for water.

It took about fifteen minutes to recover, and to look around me.

It was practically empty, just the four of us.

Two of the men argued about who had attacked.

I resigned myself to my ignorance.

I try to get away from the shouting.

The lights from the bright sign blind out the sand whirling around outside.

Desperate to be away from the group, I took to the bathroom.

When I saw the word, I wondered if that would make it any better.

…

Glass shattered in the bar.

I went out to investigate.

The lights were out.

There was not a sound.

“Hello?”

My face slams on the camera as I hit the ground.

And the last light faded out.

It was a long time before they woke me up.
